The Coral Bleaching Effect

Mandate

I was tasked to create a site that dives into the topic of coral bleaching.

Coral Bleaching

Coral bleaching is when corals turn white because they lose tiny algae that live inside them. These algae give corals their color and food. When the ocean gets too hot or polluted, the corals get stressed and push the algae out, making them weak and more likely to die.

Design Making

I used an extended sans-serif typeface to push the urgency of the situation. The content is structured around key questions—why, how, what, when, and "help"—to create a sense of inquiry and encourage engagement. I want to show the dichotomy of the colorless corals through our human actions that lead to the gradual decimation of the colourless coral reefs that we have created, to arouse a sense of alertness of the cause through our actions using these colours.

Design Thinking

I wanted to create a design that reflects the bleaching of the corals throughout the four oceans. I used factual information to bring awareness to the coral bleaching that is increasing significantly each year. Not only that, but as well as demonstrating pictures like a ‘before’ and ‘after’ with the difference of what was once a beautiful ocean with its brilliant corals at the bottom vs. the now decayed and deceased colorless coralline.
